LAMONT—On Aug. 25, South Kern Building Healthy Communities will be hosting an Arts and Culture Fair.
The event will be held at Sunset Middle School located at 8301 Sunset Boulevard in Weedpatch, CA.
“The fair is to bring arts and culture into the community as an approach to community health,” said Nina Carter, Hub Coordinator for Building Healthy Communities in South Kern. “And hope that people gain a sense of community where your culture and art makes you healthy.”
The event will start at 5 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. Activities include participating in the mural and art centers. There will be chalk art were participants are offered a square and draw their ideal of a healthy community. There will also be kid centers for younger children.
Free food will be provided along with entertainment. There will be a variety of dancers from Aztec to Hula and Zumba. A raffle will also take place. It’s all in hopes that the community has a good time.
Once night fall begins around 7:30 p.m. there will a showing of “Akeelah and the Bee.” A movie about a young girl from south Los Angeles, who tries to make it to the National Spelling Bee with the help of her community.
Carter suggests everyone to bring a blanket or chair.
An art contest will also be taking place where contesants can win an iPod touch. Your creativity will be judged by the theme “How does your culture/community make you healthy?” Submissions can consist of any media such as drawings, photos, paintings, sculptures, etc., but must me turned in before Aug. 25. You can submit your work to apickett@lesd.us or turn it in at the Arvin, Lamont, or Greenfield Family Resource Centers.
The event will be family oriented. The expected audience will be those who have been involved with healthy communities and residents in Arvin, Lamont, Weedpatch and Greenfield.
Free transportaion is provided. Buses leave at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and return at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Bus stops at the following places:

Lamont: Rancho Linda Apartments, Lamont Library, and Lamont/Weedpatch FRC
Arvin: Arvin Veteran’s Hall, and Arvin Family Resource Center
