The Bakersfield Police Department announced Monday — the beginning of Peace Officers Memorial Week — it has a new mission statement and new core values.
BPD Chief Lyle Martin said in a Facebook Live video staff and community members contributed to making the new statement.
The new mission statement is: “The Bakersfield Police Department partners with our community to protect the lives and property of the people we serve.”
Martin said in the video he wanted to come up with a new mission statement, “Because the community is the police, and the police is the community.”
The department also came up with new guiding values: compassion, accountability and professionalism.
