Health officials report first COVID-19 Delta variant case in Kern County

The Kern County Public Health Department confirmed Wednesday 162 new COVID-19 cases in Kern County over the last five days, bringing the total of cases to 111,273.

Health officials also confirmed one new COVID-19 related death, brining the total to 1,409.

According to the Kern County Public Health Department, Kern County has identified one case of COVID-19 as the Delta variant.

The Delta variant is now the dominant strain of the coronavirus in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of July 3, the delta variant accounted for 51.7 percent of new Covid-19 cases that had been genetically sequenced in the country, NBC News reports. Two weeks earlier, on June 19, the variant accounted for just more than 30 percent of new cases.
