Delano to incorporate Ethnic Studies as a high school requirement

February 13, 2025 /

The Delano Joint Union School District (DJUSD) held their monthly meeting, on Tuesday, where they discussed agenda items J1 and J2 regarding the Ethnic Studies course. The California AB 101 has made it mandatory for all high schools in California to offer the Ethnic Studies course beginning the next school year.

The incorporation of the Ethnic Studies course falls under the A-G requirements needed for students to graduate high school and prepare them for college. The course would be required for the following graduating classes of 2029-2030.

The course would be about four weeks and divided into four units focusing on a different BIPOC community. Students will be required to read A Different Mirror for Young People: A History of Multicultural America by American historian Ronald Takaki. The book highlights the history of oppression and exploitation by voicing the stories of racial and ethnic groups throughout American society.

Unit 1 will have students explore the history of the systemic issues that African- Americans experience with an emphasis on the Civil Rights Movement. Unit 2 will explore the history of the Indigenous people of America. Unit 3 will explore the history of Latin Americans in U.S. history and use data to dissect the diverse community that exists.  Unit 4 will have students study the APIME (Asian, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern) experience in history.
