Kern County and SEIU enter mediation for negotiations

April 2, 2025 /

In a news release by Kern County’s union, SEIU Local 521, announced they have entered mediation as negotiations continue over a staffing crisis impacting public safety and health services.

Which means there is now a neutral third party to help both sides reach an agreement during contract talks.

“After seeing firsthand the impacts of thousands of our members taking action, the County has agreed to return to the negotiation table with the assistance of a mediator. The County has made a commitment to put forth an improved offer,” said Alicia Aleman, Kern County Social Worker and SEIU Local 521 Chapter President in a statement.

SEIU Local 521 is looking for a contract that improves staffing and retention, citing concerns over public safety, health services, 911 staffing, and infrastructure issues highlighted in a recent grand jury report.

“However, we remain clear: if the county fails to end its unfair labor practices and present an offer that meaningfully addresses the ongoing staffing crisis our members remain ready to take action, including going back on an Unfair Labor Practice Strike, if necessary,” Aleman stated.

SEIU Local 521 asked Kern County to offer solutions for worker retention and public safety, and stated that temporary fixes are not enough.

Last month, the union marched in front of the Kern County Administrative Office Building as part of a 24-hour Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) Strike on March 5. Where SEIU leaders explained that Kern County salaries lag 25-30% behind comparable counties, worsening the staffing crisis.

“That’s not just unfair, it’s driving our staffing crisis and hurting the very communities we serve. If Kern wants to recruit and retain the best, they need to pay what’s fair,” said Rico Mendez, Chief Elected Officer of SEIU 521.

Mendez told Kern Sol News during the strike that Kern County residents have a life expectancy five years lower than the California state average, which is a direct result of underfunded public services.
