Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday afternoon that the month of June would be recognised as Immigrant Heritage Month. The celebration would be celebrated all across the state of California.
The proclamation recognizes the constant discrimination and perjury that immigrant communities are facing under the current administration. The governor recognises the contributions not only economically-culturally, safety, and innovation made by immigrants.
As Immigration and Customs Enforcement continues to raid the streets of Los Angeles, community members have surrounded the streets in opposition to their presence. The Governor reminds California citizens that “Immigrants are inextricably and beautifully woven into California’s past, present, and future.”
While the Trump Administration proceeds to slander immigrant communities by using discriminatory tactics and language, Newsom resorts to supporting the community and adds how much they enrich the state through various avenues.
Throughout the proclamation, the governor ensures that California will not participate in the darkest parts of history. According to the Public Policy of California, more than half (55%) of immigrants in California are either documented residents, citizens, or have legal residency status.
