The Shafter Lions Club and Business Network is teaming up to combat hunger this Independence Day through a food donation drive benefiting Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK). Titled “Independence from Hunger,” the drive encourages residents to donate nonperishable food items now through July 4.
“One of our missions is to support our community. We thought that it would be a great idea to encourage our Shafter community to assist with food insecurity in our area alongside fireworks,” said Lions volunteer Christna Camacho.
Camacho further explained that as people gather for the holiday, not only can they enjoy the fireworks, but also help in assisting local families who are struggling with food security.
In rural areas such as Shafter, it can be difficult for the community to receive food services and resources.
“We do the very best job that we can to make sure that we hear out our community and what their needs are and then provide that service,” said Camacho.
Donations of items such as pasta, canned chili, macaroni and cheese, and cereal will be accepted now through July 4 at noon at the Shafter Lions’ fireworks booth locations:
- Dollar General – 337 E. Lerdo Hwy., Shafter, CA 93263
- La Hacienda Market – 315 James St., Shafter, CA 93263
Through a partnership with the Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK), the Shafter Lions Club is using this year’s Fourth of July festivities as more than just a way to celebrate, but as a way to give back to the community as well.
