Community Webinar to Discuss Ten Commandments Proposal in Schools

November 2, 2025 /

Local parents, educators, community members and the grassroots group 50501 Bakersfield are organizing a free webinar on Wednesday, Nov. 5, to discuss the social, educational, and legal implications of a proposed “Ten Commandments Resolution” being considered by the Kern County Board of Education (KCBOE).

The webinar begins at 6 p.m. and is open to all community members. Registration information is available online here.

50501 Bakersfield is a local volunteer group of residents who focus on civic engagement and community issues.

The event, titled “Church, State & Our Public Schools,” is to inform residents about the potential impacts of the resolution, which would post the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms.

For about a year, the board has discussed efforts to display the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms.

The proposal returned to the agenda at the KCBOE’s Oct. 14, 2025, meeting, this time presented as part of a group of “historical documents,” including the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

Trustee Mary M. Little has led the effort and has publicly stated there is “no separation of church and state.”

She has also stated that “our court of law is based upon the Ten Commandments” and wants them posted in schools.

Organizers said the webinar will feature legal experts, educators, parents, students, and faith leaders who will discuss how the resolution could affect the separation of religion and public education.

According to the event flyer, the discussion will focus on protecting the boundary between personal faith and public education, avoiding costly legal challenges, and maintaining public trust in school governance.

“Our goal is to remind school boards that faith is personal, not political,” organizers stated in promotional materials.
