CDC updates COVID guidelines, individuals no longer need to quarantine after exposure

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced the updated COVID-19 guidelines.

Individuals who aren’t fully vaccinated or vaccinated at all no longer need to quarantine themselves if they come in close contact with someone who has been infected with COVID-19.

“We’re in a stronger place today as a nation, with more tools—like vaccination, boosters, and treatments—to protect ourselves, and our communities, from severe illness from COVID-19,” said Greta Massetti, who leads the Field Epidemiology and Prevention Branch at the CDC. “We also have a better understanding of how to protect people from being exposed to the virus, like wearing high-quality masks, testing, and improved ventilation.  This guidance acknowledges that the pandemic is not over, but also helps us move to a point where COVID-19 no longer severely disrupts our daily lives.”

The Food and Drug Administration also updated some of their guidelines and said that individuals using at-home COVID-19 tests should use three tests to have a more accurate result.

“It’s a positive sign that advances in vaccines and treatments have significantly lowered the risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death from the disease,” said Dr. Daniel P. McQuillen, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. “However, with much of the country experiencing higher than 20% transmission rates, we cannot let our guard down.”
