All 47 school districts in Kern County to remain closed through 2019-2020 academic year, meal programs continue

    The Kern County Superintendent of Schools announced Wednesday it is following Governor Newsom’s lead, and schools will remain closed through the end of the academic school year.

    “Based on the Governor’s remarks today, it is clear that school districts will continue education for the remainder of the school year through distance learning, only, and schools will remain physically closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year,” said Robert Meszaros, the KCSOS communications director. “Kern County’s 47 school districts and local and state partners are working diligently to continue to implement distance learning and continued nutrition services for students.”

    This does not mean school is cancelled. School districts will be providing distance learning to their students on different online platforms.

    The Bakersfield City School District announced Thursday morning all BCSD schools will remain closed through the current 2019-2020 school year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The closure extends to 44 schools in the district that serves over 30,000 students in the Bakersfield city area.

    “The health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said KCSOS Superintendent Doc Ervin in a press release.

    During the closure, BCSD will continue its ongoing meal program for students ages 2 to 18; however, will reduce the number of sites offering free meals in order to relieve stress on its nutrition teams. The change will go into effect beginning Monday, April 6.

    The following school sites will be distributing meals daily Monday (except April 13,) through Thursday between the hours of 11am to 1pm:

    -Emerson
    -Frank West
    -Fremont
    -Garza
    -Horace Mann
    -Harding
    -Stella Hills
    -Jefferson
    -Longfellow
    -Mt. Vernon
    -Nichols
    -Owens Primary
    -Pauly
    -Pioneer
    -Roosevelet
    -Voorhies
    -Washington
    -Wayside
    -Williams
    -Vida Scott Center

    The following Kern High School District sties will also offer “grab-and-go” meals:
