Several workshops this fall will help families in Kern, Tulare, Kings, and surrounding counties understand their rights when it comes to special education. The sessions are designed to support parents and caregivers of students who may need or are already receiving special education services.
The free workshops are hosted by Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) in partnership with local organizations. Topics include:
- September 3, 2025: What is special education and how can I help my student get services?
This session will explain what special education is, how to qualify for services, and what to do if the school disagrees that a student needs support. - October 8, 2025: Attendance and School Pushout
Families will learn how to support students who are avoiding school or being pushed out due to discipline, bullying, or disability-related issues. - November 5, 2025: A Guide to Your Child’s IEP
This session will cover how to read an Individualized Education Program (IEP), understand the process, and handle disagreements with the school.
Workshops are available in two time slots—1:00–2:30 p.m. and 6:00–7:30 p.m.—and can be attended either virtually (via Zoom or Instagram Live with Cancel the Contract) or in-person at:
