South Kern Sol is the youth-led publication of South Kern. South Kern Sol staff are youths between the ages of 14 to 24 from the areas of Greenfield, Arvin, Lamont and Weedpatch.
South Kern Sol aims to bring light and truth about the issues that are important to those living in South Kern. South Kern Sol reporters are well aware that often times mainstream media ignores coverage of South Kern or provides a cookie-cutter approach in their reporting. South Kern Sol strives to be the voice of the voiceless and improve the health and quality of life of those living in South Kern.
South Kern Sol was created by New America Media, with financial support from The California Endowment and the Knight Foundation. South Kern Sol is partner of the Building Healthy Communities initiative and will produce health-related content.
South Kern Sol was formed July 7, 2011 and has trained youth in the journalistic style of story telling, photo taking and video. South Kern Sol’s newsroom is located in the Lamont Boys and Girls Club.
