Elevating youth voice for health and racial equity
South Kern Sol (SKS) is a youth-led journalism organization located in Bakersfield, California. SKS was launched in 2011 with financial support from The California Endowment, and since has continually shined a light on health disparities that exist in underserved communities across Kern County.
South Kern Sol is engendering a new generation of youth leaders and communicators engaged with the issues closest to them and their communities. SKS’s storytellers are making health happen in underserved communities in Kern by engaging in conversations with decision makers and questioning systems and policies that are oppressing communities of color.
South Kern Sol youth take on topics that need to be elevated such as access to safe drinking water at schools, equitable funding for low-income schools, health care access and the importance of having maintained parks in communities of color.
